street music roadtrip for charity and activism (nationwide (MI based))
Hello, My name is Justin Jakimiak, you can find me on facebook, along with the movement I'm working on starting, The Vanbuskers. I'm going to lay out my plan on here from the big picture, to the small details I want to accomplish.
I am currently assembling a small team of musicians, artists, and filmmakers to join me on a cross-country tour of North America to travel cross country with me and make a documentary about street music. On our tour we will spend our time more or less like this.
Each trip to a new city will consist of
-Travelling around the city to see the local street music.
-Doing interviews, and gathering footage of local buskers.
-spend 2 days volunteering for local non-profits, or homeless shelters, perhaps do some music lessons. I want to find a way to get people to donate unused instruments to the local schools and generate more interest in music programs. Maybe by going through local radio stations.
-try to get on the local college radio.
-Final day, put on a show at whatever venue will have us, $7 cover, all proceeds either to our travel expenses or local charity, depending on what we need (read: sponsorship status). The shows will focus on the local buskers, with back-up music provided by us! I want to do variety shows, with painters/other performers alongside the music.
-spread the love and peace out.
In the sticks between big cities, we'll stop by small farms and do volunteer days, so we'll need to build a network to find good organic farms to go to. Check out the LOST bus on facebook, I'm going to adopt some of their tactics.
Our other thing we'll do is stop by small businesses in small towns, and just ask if they want some live music, then we can collect some donations that way.
It is not decided who all will join me on the bus. I have a technical supervisor who is working on building mobile busking equipment, and will be in charge of the veggie oil conversion, and living space on the bus. There have been many worthy applicants and everyone who takes an interest is considered for a spot or to meet up. It's just as important to have people to meet with along the way to act as tour guides and the like, as it is to have people ride on the bus. So I'm considering the option that some people will join for short legs of the trip.
Along the way we'll be doing updates via youtube, vimeo, facebook, blog, website, etc. After the road trip is over the collected film footage will be turned into a comprehensive documentary on busking culture and the adventure, as well as an all original soundtrack comprised of samples of all the musicians we meet on the journey.
A main goal that I want to accomplish with The Vanbuskers is to work with charities that support music programs for underprivileged youth and the neighborhoods where they live, and so I would like to make The Vanbuskers available to respectable organizations in need wherever we go.. In addition, I want to donate a portion, realistically %15-%30 of all money earned while busking. The rest would be used for our travel expenses. We will also look for sponsorships to help with travel, and other expenses.
The bus will have a completely self-sustaining eco-friendly power system. The engine will be converted to burn waste vegetable oil and the trailer will contain an area for filtering and prepping the oil. Our main power source will be solar modules on top of the bus and trailer that will constantly charge a 12 volt battery bank. The bus will also be fitted with a high output alternator to help charge the batteries while the motor is running. The key to relying only on solar power will be efficiency so all electronics on the bus will be as efficient as possible. Our biggest energy consumer will be a barrel heater used when we filter and dewater the used cooking oil. We are also trying to get our hands on a diesel generator for backup power when we need it. The generator will of course be converted to burn waste veggie oil. That is the basics of our power system and it will be tweaked and adjusted to fit our needs and budget.
Obviously I can't do all of this on my own, but that's the whole point of this posting, I'm trying to get this idea to reach critical mass, so if you like the idea that I'm promoting you can start by going to facebook and liking The Vanbuskers' page, and telling your friends about the movement. Also, please post on the page with any support, ideas worth spreading, and links that would generate more interest. Send an email and I'll answer any questions you have regarding the project and how you can help, we're definitely on the lookout for in or out of the box thinkers, and hopefully you mention something I haven't thought of yet.
Also I apologize for how long winded this post is and if you've made it this far, thank you. Also thanks to all the good folks I've found using craigslist.
So that is what I want to accomplish, using this oh so excellent (and free! thanks craig) advertising tool I hope to find enough people to help this dream come to fruition.
Ultimately after the trip I want to start a co-operative on a national level, a place where artists, musicians, carpenters, gardeners, business people, fashion designers, yogis, politicians, (are you catching my drift here?) can communicate with each other, cut out the need to beg a corporation for money or endorsement, and achieve their dreams. The only requirement for joining would be that you want to live in a way that is more in harmony with the interests of all human beings, and with nature.
