Blacksburg football couldn't be successful playing a AA schedule, so they scheduled down to get some wins. Four single A schools??? Yes, Radford and Floyd are strongly supported schools, but they flat out stink at football. Neither has a MS or JV team, so I don't see any progress for the future there. Both areas are losing student populations. It's been quite some time since BHS football has won more than 2-3 games, much less a winning season. ,
As far as BHS Basketball, they've also scheduled down to garner a few more wins, but they've been blown out in just about every game they've played. Look back through BHS history and this has never happened before. I've seen them play twice and can't bring myself to go back. The players look lost on the court and just fire up shots without any resemblance of an offense. Painful to watch for sure.
I have to agree with the poster who said the programs at BHS suffer from parents who desperately want their kids to be successful, and just can't accept that they average. They throw tons of money at the school and work the coaches over to make sure their kid plays.
In all three areas, not until a change is made to someone who can invigorate people to participate, and shuffle the politics aside, will performance improve. I happen to know for a fact that some of the best athletes are walking the hallways and not playing these sports. I know this because I teach there. When students don't respect a coach, there is no hope for them to even consider playing. Take a good hard look at the sports at BHS that are successful and you see a very simple common model. Good, hard working, motivated coaches who wow their kids into participating. No politics. No parent involvement. Just the coaches and hard working kids. Examine the programs that win at other schools and it's the same formula.
At VT, Mr. Beamer has past his time. He was great for VT for quite some time, but the game has changed, and he has not adapted. I attended Blacksburg Sports Club meeting for years now and you can tell just by listening to coaches speak that the culture of the program has changed. For example, what once was a touted advantage of a long term stable staff, is now a turnstile. Only Coach Foster and a few defensive coaches are keeping the team afloat. Beamer Jr certainly hasn't added any value. The new OC had worse stats that the fired one and everyone on offense had a year more experience. The OL is terrible and seems to get worse each year. I could go on, but won't.
In closing, whoever made that comment about letting VT basketball play BHS is insane. BHS can't even beat Floyd and Radford. Granted VTBB is terrible, but suggesting BHS could be competitive is just outrageous.
