I purchased this starter late last year from a retired, certified Mercruiser Master Technician for $150. My starter was not working very well, so I was hoping to replace my starter with this one. Regardless, he said that a customer had him remove it from a Merc 470 engine that had low compression. He also said that "he checked the starter before removing it and that it appeared to work fine." Unfortunately, when I got back home and compared it to my starter, I discovered that the used starter I had just purchased was different than the starter on my 1978 Merc 470.
I called Mercruiser Tech Support and learned that Mercury had used at least 2 different starters on the Merc 470's, pending the year the engine was manufactured. They also said that this starter was also used on some other Mercury engines."
The label on the starter reads: "SAE J1171 Marine" starter. (Ref 2nd Photo).
Therefore, I then conducted a Google Search and learned that "this starter was also used on MerCruiser V6 and V8 engines as well as some outboard engines like the 25 HP 4-stroke models from 1999-2001."
Regardless, I then removed the starter from my engine and took it and this starter to Dominion Starter Service in Roanoke and asked them to rebuild my starter and also evaluate this one. When I picked the starters up, they said "they bench tested this starter and it worked good." They also said that "other than possibly needing alittle cleaning, it appeared to be in excellent condition." You can also tell in the 3rd picture that the starter gear (teeth that fits into flywheel) is in excellent condition.
Note: Mercruiser no longer makes Merc 470's or starters for them. If you are fortunate enough to find one today, it will most likely have to be an used one or an aftermarket one.
This is a great opportunity to purchase a good used Mercury starter at a very low price (85% less than the $150 that I paid for this starter last year). The only reason I am selling it at such a low price is that it does not fit my engine. Hopefully, it will fit someone's engine and they can get some good use out of it.
